The call of God on a believer’s life is a wondrous, yet often overwhelming experience. You understand, of course, that every disciple of Jesus has a call to serve. This course is designed for you to explore your particular call from God for service. Specifically, it will address the unique call of officership in The Salvation Army. We pray your participation in this course will help confirm that call for you, or guide you to other effective service as a salvation soldier.
As you explore your call, be encouraged to remember that the Holy Spirit provides for his children everything necessary to fulfill the mission. Our mission is exciting. We believe The Salvation Army was raised up to Save Souls, Grow Saints and Serve Suffering Humanity. We serve in an “Army” that needs trained, Spirit-filled officer/leaders and willing, on-fire soldiers who will face the enemy and claim the lost for Jesus! We are a fighting force!
In this war, we remember always that Christ is our Captain. With eyes focused on Him, ears tuned to His commands, hearts and hands ready to obey and voices filled with praise and the proclamation of the Good News, we fight with passion and perseverance.
We fight in the power of the Holy Spirit who equips us with all we need for the battle. He is also the Spirit of God within us, training us, teaching us and shaping us to be more like our Commander, Jesus. We must be officers and soldiers who embody the very nature and character of Jesus. We must be transparent, revealing integrity and holiness. We must be filled with compassion for the lost with a willingness to seek them, touch them-love them. Above all, we must be faithful to the call of God.
We are an “Army”–we do not fight alone. We celebrate the glorious community of the Church Universal and the unique community of The Salvation Army. We are a blessed people, never forgetting that we are “. . . a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praise of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9 NIV). Yes, we are a “people”–plural. Together we stand, together we fight; together-with all our individual gifts, personalities, perspectives and cultures. We seek unity within our diversity that will honor the God who made us each distinct, yet calls us to work together according to his perfect will and purpose.
We want to be the best we can be. We need fully capable, competent officers in The Salvation Army. Take advantage of this opportunity to develop spiritually and academically. We will not be requiring huge educational effort for this course of study, but your participation will demand thought, time, and effort. Do not fear, but persevere and allow God’s Holy Spirit to work in you even in this challenge.
We pray that God will speak to you and direct you in the days ahead as you proceed with this course of study. May your heart be open to His leading.
